| Title | Globe Salvage Versus Exenteration in Nasolacrimal Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Outcomes from a Tertiary Unit |
| Number | 317 |
| Author | Bayan Shahin |
| Principal Unit where research was undertaken | Gartnavel General Hospital/The Tennent Institute of Ophthalmology |
| Purpose | To quantify the risk of orbital exenteration in nasolacrimal squamous cell carcinoma and define the factors determining globe preservation |
| Methods | A retrospective case series was performed using electronic patient records over a 12 year period. Patients with nasolacrimal SCC were included in analysis. Data included symptoms on presentation, histopathology, surgical management, and outcomes. Procedures were categorised as globe-sparing versus orbital exenteration. |
| Results | Sixteen patients were included (7 females and 9 males) with a mean age of 47 years. Twelve patients underwent globe-sparing surgery with post operative adjuvant radiotherapy. Four patients required orbital exenteration for advanced invasive malignant disease. Two patients died following metastatic disease. |
| Conclusion | Nasolacrimal squamous cell carcinoma can be managed successfully with globe-sparing surgery. However, exenteration remains necessary in advanced invasive disease. A clear staging system for nasolacrimal SCC is required to further guide management. |
