Title Training the Oculoplastic Surgeon: A Scoping Review of Simulation-Based Education
Number 304
Author Rebecca Jones
Principal Unit where research was undertaken Bristol Eye Hospital

Purpose

There has been increasing enthusiasm for the use of simulation training in oculoplastics, with a variety of models developed for simulation purposes. We wish to collate and appraise the literature on available models, in order to evidence future educational design and provide potential future research directions.

Methods

A search was performed on Medline and Embase to identify relevant articles describing training of oculoplastic, lacrimal or orbital surgical skills in a simulation environment, including virtual reality, wet lab and dry lab modalities. The educational impact of each article was evaluated using McGaghie’s levels of translational learning outcomes of simulation-based education.

Results

There were 46 studies that met inclusion criteria: 23 describing simulation in a wet lab environment (using animal or human cadaveric models), 19 dry lab studies (artificial/synthetic models) and 4 in virtual/mixed reality. Most used subjective methods of assessment, and few showed benefits of simulation on real-life surgical performance.

Conclusion

The potential for simulation-based training in oculoplastics is extensive, however, there is a lack of strong evidence for its use. More comprehensive research is necessary to evidence effective implementation into oculoplastic training.
