Miss Joyce Burns, Leicester
Joyce Burns has been consultant ophthalmologist and oculoplastic surgeon since 2005. She works at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, a tertiary referral centre for lid, lacrimal and orbital disease, having completed ophthalmology training in Merseyside and the East Midlands before fellowships at Leicester and Nottingham.
She has a special interest in ocular prosthetics, undertaking a twice monthly joint clinic with a senior prosthetist from the National Artificial Eye Service, and has twice been invited speaker for at the annual Prosthetists Conference in Blackpool. She is passionate about promoting a wider understanding of ocular prostheses, speaking on the topic at the national optometry conference and the Nottingham Paediatric Oculoplastics meeting. She is currently working with local providers to develop a practical course for patients with newly acquired monocular vision.
She was joint developer of the Leicester Peripheral Field test used to demonstrate the visual defects generated by ptosis or dermatochalasis, presenting the work in the UK (BOPSS 2011) and the USA (ASOPRS 2012). She was also co-author of the BOPSS 2013 paper prize for a 10 year study looking at the risk of BCC recurrence based on histological subtype.
