Dr. Ilse Mombaerts MD PhD
Ilse Mombaerts graduated magna cum laude as bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of Leuven, Belgium in 1985, graduated summa cum laude as Doctor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Leuven in 1989, qualified in Ophthalmology at the University Hospitals Leuven in 1993, took a clinical and research orbital fellowship at the Orbital Center Amsterdam (1992-1996) and received a PhD on Orbital Pseudotumor at the University of Amsterdam in 1996. She is founder and director of the Orbital, Lacrimal & Eyelid Unit at the University Hospitals of Leuven and Professor in the Department of Neurosciences at the Catholic University of Leuven. Her scientific work focuses on orbital inflammatory disorders, anophthalmic socket syndrome, lacrimal outflow surgery, and extraocular muscle tissue engineering, on which she has authored peer-reviewed papers, contributed to textbooks, and participated in international initiatives aimed at improving guidelines in the management of patients with these conditions. Prof. Mombaerts serves on the editorial board of Clinical & Experimental Ophthalmology and Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
