Mr Newman was appointed as consultant ophthalmic surgeon at The Manchester Royal Eye Hospital in 2016 having spent the previous fourteen years as consultant jointly at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and St Paul’s Eye Unit in Liverpool.
William graduated from The London Hospital Medical College in 1986. Subsequently he trained in Bournemouth, Glasgow and London undertaking fellowships in paediatric ophthalmology at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Glasgow (Yorkhill) and in neuro-ophthalmology jointly at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (Queen Square) and Moorfields Eye Hospital in London.
He has represented ophthalmology variously on the Council of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, a member of the Clinical Reference Group for Specialist Ophthalmic Services and from 2013 – 2017 as Honorary Secretary of the Royal College of Ophthalmologist. He is an appointed member of the Secretary of State for Transport’s Honorary Advisory Panel on Driving and Visual Disorders.
His practice is in all aspects of children’s eye care and surgery and has special interests in the effects and treatment of visual disorders following eye or brain injury either congenital or acquired, congenital cataract and the ocular management of craniofacial and oculoplastic disorders.
He has an active medicolegal practice particularly in relation to disorders of vision in trauma and brain injury
